Philip Blouin Obituary

Philip Blouin, of Torrington, passed away unexpectedly and tragically in a boating/fishing accident Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

He was born and raised in Torrington, the fifth child of Bernice A. (Kozlowski) and Robert M. Blouin. A communicant of Saint Francis of Assisi Church, Philip attended Saint Francis School, Oliver Wolcott Technical High School, and studied computer science at the University of Connecticut, where he met his future wife, Lauren Meyer.

Although he worked as a local builder and contractor after college, he eventually found his passion for work in metallurgy, and he parlayed a hobby of alloying and casting metals into a career as a plant manager at a local foundry, Winchester Products, in Winsted. Phil’s enthusiasm for his work, and his genius for innovation led to his referring to the foundry as the “fundry.”

He loved his work, but he loved his family more. Phil and his college sweetheart, Lauren, married in 1994, and raised two sons, Steve and Sam, in the house he built in Torrington, next to that of his parents, Bob and Bonnie. He was a devoted father, and was an active volunteer in the Cub Scouts as a Scoutmaster, having attained the rank of Eagle, himself.

Phil especially enjoyed spending time with his family camping and fishing (another one of his passions) and his contagious and offbeat sense of humor made him the life of the party at family functions. The relationship with his sons was special, and together they spent precious time hiking and exploring in the woods, working on engines, and restoring Sam’s tractor and vintage VW bug.

After the death of his father, Phil became a doting son to his mother next door, playing endless hours of number and word games with her, and frequenting her doorstep with kind words, amusing stories, and fresh flowers. She was never without a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Phil is survived by his sons Steve and Sam, and their mother, Lauren. He is also survived by his mother, Bernice, and brothers Robert and wife Carol, William and wife Patricia, and Bruce and wife Jennifer, as well as niece and nephews, Frank Roth, Nicholas Blouin, Katherine Blouin and Matthew Blouin, and many close and cherished friends, not to mention his two beloved cats, Blackie and Charlie. He is predeceased by his father, Robert M. Blouin and sister, Debra (Roth) Blouin.
