Karen "Kari" Bauer Obituary

Karen “Kari” (George) Bauer,  of Harwinton, CT passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019, at her home in Harwinton, CT.  She is survived by her husband Hans Bauer.  Kari was born on March 2, 1940, in Torrington, CT, the only child of the late George M. and Lillian (Stevens) George. 

Kari attended Southwest School in Torrington, and was a graduate of Torrington High School, Class of 1958 and attended Springfield College.  She initially taught grade school in the New Haven School System.  Later, Kari pursued her passion for cooking, and managed a cooking school, The Cookery in Woodbury, CT.  She and Hans also taught cooking classes at The Silo in New Milford, CT for many years.

Kari loved to travel, and as a young woman she traveled to Lebanon and Egypt with her grandparents.  Kari and Hans enjoyed traveling extensively in the U.S. and Europe and also lived for six months in a villa in Tuscany, Italy.  During that time, they toured many vineyards, sampling wine and olive oil.  

From 1979 to 1999, they owned and operated the  Litchfield Wine Merchant on the Green.  In conjunction with the store, they established a club called the Litchfield Hills Tasters which hosted many  dinner/tastings at area restaurants.   Kari was also active in real estate in Litchfield for many years. 

Kari loved sports especially tennis, pickleball and skiing.   Other activities included ushering at the Warner Theatre, helping out at the Sullivan Senior Center, and she was a member of the Lake Harwinton Association.

Kari is also survived by an aunt, Virginia Macol of Miami, Florida, many cousins, several nieces and nephews and friends.
