Shirley Hitchcock Obituary

Shirley R. (Turner) Hitchcock, 88, of Torrington, CT, peacefully passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.  She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur Hitchcock, Sr.

Shirley was born December 11, 1929, in Ft. Fairfield, Maine, daughter of the late Walter and Ada (Bellfeuer) Turner.

She is survived by four sons, Michael Turner of Texas, Arthur Hitchcock, Jr. of Thomaston, CT, Timothy Hitchcock of Wolcott, CT, David Hitchcock of Torrington, CT; three daughters, Becky Myers of Roper, NC, Delina Hitchcock of Waterbury, CT, Deborah Gaffney of Torrington, CT; one brother, Roy Turner of Stafford Springs, CT; one sister, Doris Glew of Ft. Fairfield, ME; thirteen grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Shirley spent the final years of her work career at the Walmart in Torrington where she worked in the fabric department until age 81, something she talked about often throughout the last years of her remarkable life. She was well known at Dairy Mart, where she worked for her daughter Becky in Torrington and in Litchfield.

She lit up whenever she spent time with her family and especially when the newest members to her large family paid a visit.

Shirley loved all animals, especially her last one, a tiger cat named Kitty.

Cooking for her family, especially Holiday meals, was important to this humble woman who worked tirelessly to make sure her family was taken care of.

Trips to North Carolina were memorable ones for the entire family, who would gather to spend time with her, as they would when she visited family in Thomaston or Waterbury.

Private funeral services have been entrusted to Cook Funeral Home, Torrington, CT.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Litchfield Woods Dementia Unit, 255 Roberts St., Torrington, CT 06790.  Condolences may be sent to Shirley’s family by visiting www.cookfuneralhomect.com
