Welcome to the memorial page for

Elmira (Plante) Oneglia

February 28, 1926 ~ September 14, 2015 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Elmira (Plante) Oneglia, age 89, of Harwinton, CT, passed away peacefully Monday evening, September 14, 2015, at the shore which she so dearly loved.  She was the beloved wife and partner of the late A. George Oneglia for 64 years.

Elmira was born on February 28, 1926, the daughter of Louise (Roy) and Archie Plante.  She attended St. Francis School and graduated from the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.  She devoted her entire life to caring for her large family.

Elmira loved the varied adventures she shared with George and their many friends – skiing in Canada, ballooning over France, rumbling along the Orient Express and walking the beaches of Spain were just a few of their escapades.  In addition, their many friends will recall their annual trips, piling into their vans and heading out to Arthur Avenue and the CIA where they partied hardy and enjoyed good food and company.

The A-Frame in Colebrook allowed for many weekends of food and fun.  It was there that she and George gathered with friends and family to make Christmas wreaths, gnocchi and ravioli.  A good time was had by all, playing horseshoes, swimming, sliding and fishing, knowing that Auntie Elmira would always have a good meal waiting, bean soup…always soup.

Many of the young people in the family and friends of her children recall with happiness the warm spirit of her home.  She was an elegant lady who welcomed all the friends and family with a sparkling smile and food!

The many beautiful flowers around her home brought her great joy.   She embraced the change of seasons which were reflected in the plantings, and coming and goings of the birds and wildlife who knew that they were welcomed.

Elmira is survived by her children, Francis Oneglia (Jill), Laurie Charleton (Willy), Drew Oneglia (Laura D’Angelo), Chaunda Oneglia (Steve Girolimon), Meghan Schmitt (Patrick).  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chelsea, Christopher, Kara, Michael, Bria, Willy, Ryan, Chelsie, Andrew and Mason, as well as her great grandchildren, Liana, AJ, Jace, Cade and Marlo, and, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband George and their eldest son Robert (Chooney), she was predeceased by her sisters, Lois Butler and Betty Fattore and a brother, Ray Plante.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Church, 107 East Main St., Torrington, CT.  Relatives and friends are asked to meet directly at St. Peter Church.  Burial will be private.  Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, CT.
